Six Furnas village hotels and guesthouses, from €65 family-run guesthouses to €280 thermal-spa boutiques. The right base for cozido dinners and Poça da Dona Beija evening soaks.
Furnas village is the geothermal heart of São Miguel and a distinctively different sleeping experience from Ponta Delgada. The village has around 1,500 residents, a single main square, a handful of restaurants, and the Poça da Dona Beija thermal pool open until 11pm in summer. Visitors who stay overnight here describe the experience as the trip-maker.
This guide covers six hotels and guesthouses in or directly next to the village, across three price tiers. All are walking distance to the village square; the most distant is 8 minutes on foot.
Why stay in Furnas rather than commute
Furnas is 1h15 from Ponta Delgada by car. A day trip works but limits you to the daylight hours. Sleeping in the village adds:
- The empty caldeiras at dawn before the day-tour buses arrive (the steam and the silence are at their best at 7am to 9am)
- The Poça da Dona Beija evening soak (open until 11pm in summer, 10pm in winter, and noticeably quieter after 8pm)
- The cozido dinner served at the local pace rather than rushed to fit a return drive
- The genuine rural quiet after the day visitors leave
Most travellers who do at least 5 days on São Miguel sleep 2 to 3 nights in Furnas. The 7-day itinerary in this guide schedules 3 Furnas nights.
Premium tier (€180 to €320 per night)
1. Furnas Boutique Hotel Thermal & Spa
The high-end Furnas pick. Modern building with a thermal pool fed from the village geothermal source, a serious in-house restaurant, spa treatments, 54 rooms. Walking distance to the village square. €220 to €320 per night, half-board package adds €60 per person.
Why it works: the only Furnas hotel with a proper in-room thermal experience. The restaurant is one of the best in the village.
2. Terra Nostra Garden Hotel
The historical landmark hotel, in operation since 1935, set inside the Terra Nostra Garden complex. 86 rooms, direct access to the iconic iron-rich thermal pool (free for hotel guests), in-house restaurant. €180 to €280 per night.

3. Octant Furnas
A renovated 65-room hotel on the village edge, basalt-stone elements with modern fittings, outdoor garden, restaurant. Walking distance to the village square. €130 to €180 per night.

4. Furnas Lake Villas
Self-catering villas on the south shore of Furnas Lake, 5-minute drive from the village. 10 stone villas with kitchens, fireplaces, direct lake access. €120 to €170 per night for the smaller villas, €200 to €280 for the larger ones (sleep 4 to 6).
Why it works: family option with kitchen. The lake-front setting is exceptional at dawn.
Budget and guesthouses (€65 to €100 per night)
5. Casa do Mercado
A small family-run guesthouse in the centre of Furnas, 8 rooms, breakfast included. The Bairos family has run the property for three generations. €65 to €100 per night.
Why it works: the authentic Furnas experience. The owners can arrange cozido dinners, give weather-and-trail advice, recommend specific village restaurants. The kind of stay where you remember the host’s name.
6. Pensão O Furnense
A modest 12-room guesthouse on the main road, walking distance to everything. €60 to €90 per night, breakfast at the on-site café (included). The budget pick.

Practical Furnas booking notes
- Half-board worth it. Furnas village restaurant choice is limited (4 to 5 serious options) and the cozido is the signature dish. Half-board packages at Furnas Boutique, Octant Furnas, and Terra Nostra Garden include a tasting of the local cuisine without the need to walk out in the evening.
- Book 3 to 6 months ahead. Furnas has around 350 visitor beds total. July to August fills early.
- Three-night minimum makes sense. Two nights is enough for the signature experiences (caldeiras, Terra Nostra, Poça da Dona Beija) but three nights lets you slow down and enjoy the village rather than rush through it.
- Parking. Most Furnas hotels include free parking. The village centre has limited free street parking; outside hotel premises, expect to walk 5 to 10 minutes.
