Terra Nostra vs Poça da Dona Beija vs Caldeira Velha. Three thermal pools, three different experiences, with practical notes on water, hours, and crowds.
Bathing in a thermal pool is the most distinctly Azorean experience you can have without leaving São Miguel. The volcanic Furnas valley sits on top of an active geothermal field, and the locals have been bathing in the warm mineral water for two centuries. Three pool complexes matter for visitors: Terra Nostra (the showpiece), Poça da Dona Beija (the local favourite), and Caldeira Velha (the forest waterfall).
This guide explains which one to choose, how the water works, what to bring, and how to combine the bath with the rest of a Furnas day.
The three pools, in one paragraph
Terra Nostra is a 200-metre orange thermal pool inside a century-old public botanical garden, the showpiece. Poça da Dona Beija is a five-pool public hot-spring complex on the edge of the village, where locals bathe in the evening. Caldeira Velha is a small forest thermal pool with a warm waterfall, on the road from Ribeira Grande to Lagoa do Fogo (not in Furnas itself, but close enough to combine).
Each has a different feel. The right choice depends on what you want.
Terra Nostra Garden
A century-old public-but-paying botanical garden built around a 200-metre, iron-rich thermal pool. The water is rust-orange (from the iron), warm but not hot (around 35–37 °C), and the surrounding garden has paths, smaller cooler pools, a camellia collection, and the restored 1930s spa hotel on its edge. Entrance is around €10 for non-hotel guests, €8 for kids, free for guests of the Terra Nostra Garden Hotel.
Best for: the iconic photo, a relaxed half-day, families with children, anyone who would also enjoy the garden walks.
Less good for: travellers who want a quick 30-minute bath and move on (the garden is the experience as much as the pool), and anyone unwilling to wear dark swimwear (see callout below).
Hours: 10am–6pm in summer (April–October), 10am–4:30pm in winter. Last admission 30 minutes before closing. Avoid Saturdays and Sundays in July–August when local families flood the garden.
Poça da Dona Beija
A public hot-spring complex on the eastern edge of Furnas village. Five natural pools at varying temperatures (the hottest around 39 °C, the coolest around 27 °C), accessible day and night. Entry €8 for adults, €6 reduced. Capacity managed by timed entry slots; book online if you are coming in July or August, otherwise walk in.
Best for: the local atmosphere, hotter water than Terra Nostra (closer to a Roman bath temperature), the evening session (open until 11pm in summer, the pools are floodlit), travellers who want a real bath rather than a garden walk.
Less good for: small children (the deeper pools are not really designed for them), travellers who specifically want the photogenic Terra Nostra orange pool.
Hours: 8am–11pm in summer, 8am–6pm in winter. The evening slot from 9pm is the most local-feeling and the most pleasant.
Caldeira Velha
A small public thermal complex set in a forest clearing on the EN1-1A road between Ribeira Grande and Lagoa do Fogo. A warm waterfall feeds a heated pool, surrounded by tree ferns and the sound of running water. Entrance €8, capacity capped at about 30 people, often busy in summer.
Best for: combining with Lagoa do Fogo (15 minutes apart) or a broader north-coast day, travellers who want the forest atmosphere rather than a manicured garden.
Less good for: travellers who specifically want to combine the bath with a Furnas day (it is a 35-minute drive from Furnas village, so logistically separate).
Combined day-tours from Ponta Delgada
If you do not have a rental car, three GYG-bookable day-tours include Furnas thermal pools as part of their itinerary.
Evening session with dinner
The Furnas night-time experience with thermal baths and dinner is the standout option for travellers who specifically want the romantic evening bath at Terra Nostra plus a dinner of local cozido in the village. Departures from PDL around 5pm, return around 11pm, around €75. Small group, well-rated (4.8 with 558 reviews). For couples, this is the right pick.
Full Furnas valley + thermal pool
The Furnas tea, lake and volcano guided tour is the daytime version: morning drive from PDL, watch the cozido lifting at the lakeside caldeiras, lunch (sometimes the cozido itself), afternoon at Terra Nostra. Around €70. The fuller Furnas experience, the right pick if you want all of Furnas in one day, not just the bath.
Eastern São Miguel van tour
The eco-friendly East São Miguel full-day van tour is the broader eastern-island circuit (Furnas, Gorreana tea plantation, Nordeste viewpoints) with a stop at Terra Nostra for a shorter bath. Around €75, comfortable van rather than jeep. Suits travellers who want a sampler of the eastern half of the island rather than a deep dive on Furnas alone.
What to bring
- Dark swimwear (see callout above).
- Towel. Both Terra Nostra and Poça da Dona Beija rent towels for €3–5 if you forget.
- Flip-flops. The walkways at both venues are wet and stone-paved.
- A clean change of clothes for after, including underwear. Your swim layer will retain a faint sulphur smell for a few hours.
- Cash (small denominations). Entry is card-friendly but the on-site café and locker fees may want coins.
- Hair tie or shower cap if your hair is long and you would rather not deal with the iron smell.
Frequently asked questions
Is the water actually clean?
Yes. Both Terra Nostra and Poça da Dona Beija are continuously fed by fresh geothermal spring water, with no recirculation. Both pools close briefly each week for cleaning. The orange colour is dissolved iron, not contamination.
Can children swim here?
Terra Nostra welcomes children of all ages. The main pool is shallow at the edges and only 1.5m at the deepest. Poça da Dona Beija sets a minimum age of 6 and is less family-oriented (the deeper pools are adult-leaning). Caldeira Velha is fine for older children but the forest pools have rocks underfoot.
What if I have skin sensitivity?
The iron and sulphur content can be drying and irritating for sensitive skin. Limit your soak to 30–45 minutes the first time, shower with fresh water afterwards, and apply moisturizer. People with skin conditions (eczema, severe psoriasis) sometimes report flare-ups; consult your doctor if uncertain.
Are the thermal pools open year-round?
Yes. The water is geothermal so the temperature stays constant year-round. Winter bathing (December–March) is wonderful: warm pool, cool air, very few tourists. Bring a dry towel and a coat for the walk back to the car.
Can I combine Terra Nostra and Poça da Dona Beija in one day?
Yes. They are a 10-minute walk apart in Furnas village. The standard pattern is Terra Nostra for the afternoon photogenic soak, dinner in the village around 7pm, then Poça da Dona Beija for the evening session. Bring two swimsuits.
