How to get to São Jorge

São Jorge Airport (SJZ) has limited direct service. For most travellers, the practical route is to fly into one of the bigger Azorean hubs (PDL, TER, HOR) and connect by ferry or inter-island SATA flight.

Direct flights to São Jorge

Origin Airline Frequency Flight time
Lisbon (LIS) TAP 3 weekly seasonal (May to Oct) 2h30
Terceira (TER) SATA 4 to 5 weekly 30 min
São Miguel (PDL) SATA 3 to 5 weekly 50 min
Faial (HOR) SATA 1 to 3 weekly 15 min
Pico (PIX) SATA 1 to 2 weekly 20 min

The inter-island flights to and from SJZ are operated by SATA's smaller Bombardier Q200 (37 seats). Schedule cancellations due to weather are noticeably more frequent than at the larger central-group airports.

The Atlanticoline ferry

The most useful access option for most visitors. Velas harbour is the central-group ferry hub for São Jorge.

Route Summer frequency Crossing time Fare
Velas ↔ Horta (Faial) 1 to 2 daily 90 min €15 one way
Velas ↔ Madalena (Pico) 1 to 2 daily 90 min €15 one way
Calheta (eastern São Jorge) ↔ São Roque (northern Pico) Summer only, occasional 60 min €10

The São Jorge ferry sailings are noticeably more weather-sensitive than the short Horta-Madalena crossing. Winter sailings drop to 3 to 5 per week and cancel frequently. Build a buffer day before your international departure if you depend on the ferry.

From North America and Europe

No direct service. The standard routings:

  • Via Boston: SATA from BOS to Terceira (TER) or São Miguel (PDL), then inter-island SATA to SJZ. Total time around 11 to 12 hours.
  • Via Lisbon: Any transatlantic carrier to LIS, then TAP seasonal to SJZ or via PDL.
  • Via the central-group ferry: Fly to HOR (Faial) or PIX (Pico), then 90-minute ferry to Velas. Cheaper and often more flexible than the SJZ flights.

From the airport to your accommodation

SJZ airport sits between Velas and Calheta, 8 km from either. Options:

  • Rental car at the airport. Ilha Verde and local operators. €30 to €70 per day. Book ahead; the fleet is small.
  • Taxi. €12 to €18 to Velas, €15 to €22 to Calheta. Pre-book through your hotel for peak times.
  • Hotel transfer. Most accommodations offer pickup for €10 to €20 per person.

The central-group triangle

São Jorge is the third leg of the classic Pico-Faial-São Jorge triangle. The ferry network makes it doable:

  • 3-island ferry tour (7 to 10 days): Fly into HOR or PIX, ferry to São Jorge mid-trip, ferry back. The triangle covers maritime culture (Faial), volcanic landscape (Pico), and dramatic hiking (São Jorge). The most rewarding central-group itinerary.
  • 2-island Faial + São Jorge: 5 to 7 days. Fly into HOR, ferry to Velas, return ferry. Skip Pico if hiking is your priority.
  • São Miguel + São Jorge: 7 to 10 days. Less obvious combination, but works for travellers who want the iconic big-island plus an off-the-beaten-track second island. Inter-island SATA flight, 50 minutes each way.
