A small traditional guesthouse on a fajã of São Jorge, Azores, with whitewashed walls, a stone-tiled terrace, vines growing on a wooden trellis, the towering basalt cliffs of the central plateau rising behind, the Atlantic ocean and a small black-pebble beach visible in the foreground, warm late-afternoon light

Where to stay on São Jorge

São Jorge has fewer accommodation options than the bigger central-group islands. Velas is the default base, Calheta works for the eastern fajãs, and a few fajã guesthouses offer the most authentic version of the island.

Velas (western coast)

The main town and the practical default. Ferry port, largest restaurant choice, easiest access to the western fajãs and to the Pico da Esperança trailhead. Drive times from Velas: 25 minutes to Fajã dos Cubres, 30 minutes to the Pico da Esperança trailhead, 40 minutes to Calheta, 50 minutes to Topo lighthouse.

Three reliable options:

  • Hotel São Jorge Garden. The largest hotel on the island, 4-star, central Velas. €100 to €170 per night double. Most rooms have terrace access.
  • Casa do Almeida. A boutique guesthouse in a restored 19th-century townhouse 5 minutes from the seafront. 6 rooms, €90 to €140. Personal service, breakfast included.
  • Smaller pensãos. Several family-run guesthouses along Rua Cônsul Dabney, €50 to €85 per night double. The most local-feeling option.

Calheta (eastern coast)

The second town, on the eastern coast 40 minutes from Velas. Closer to the eastern fajãs (Topo, do Vimes) and to the cheese cooperative at Beira. Less restaurant choice than Velas; the airport is 15 minutes away.

Notable: Quinta do Galo, a small rural estate just inland from Calheta with 4 rooms and a working farm. €90 to €140 per night, breakfast from the farm included.

Fajã guesthouses

A handful of small guesthouses on the inhabited fajãs themselves. The most authentic version of São Jorge stays. Each is a 30 to 60 minute walk or drive from the ridge road, you wake up at sea level under the cliff.

  • Casa do Café in Fajã dos Cubres. Two rooms above the village café, €70 to €100 per night. Books months ahead for summer. The owner is also the best local fishing guide on the island.
  • Casa do Surfista at Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo. A surfer's cottage on the trail-only fajã, 4 simple rooms, €50 to €70 per night including breakfast. The descent is part of the experience.

Booking tips

  • Reserve early. The fleet of rooms on São Jorge is small. 3 to 4 months ahead for July to August.
  • Festa do Queijo (mid-September). The cheese festival weekend fills the available beds. Book a month ahead at minimum.
  • Ferry timing. If you are arriving by ferry from Faial or Pico, the Velas-side accommodation is the right choice. The walking distance from the ferry to most Velas hotels is under 10 minutes.
  • Trail runners. If you are on the island for the ridge run, base in Velas and arrange a shuttle service through your accommodation for point-to-point runs.
